The Hidden Appetite of Hardwoods
Subterranean termites feed on cellulose, the organic compound found in wood. While they prefer softer structural timbers, species native to South East Queensland are highly adaptive and will eagerly tunnel into hardwood floorboards if they provide a reliable, undisturbed food source.
Because termites must maintain a strictly regulated, high-humidity microclimate to survive, they eat timber from the inside out. They will meticulously chew through the bulk of a floorboard while leaving a paper-thin veneer of wood or polyurethane finish on top to seal themselves away from the light and open air.
By the time the surface layer splits or buckles underfoot, as it did in the North Ipswich property, the structural integrity of the flooring system is already severely compromised.
The Concrete Path and Slab Illusion
Another key learning from our recent case files comes from an inspection in Corinda. The property owners believed their home was safe because it was built on a modern concrete slab surrounded by concrete pathways.
Unfortunately, concrete is not a barrier to termites. Subterranean colonies travel through the soil and will seamlessly exploit the hairline shrinkage cracks that form around plumbing penetrations, electrical conduits, or the external perimeter edge where the concrete pavement meets the brickwork.
